The data on women's participation in national parliaments around the world comes from the PARLINE database compiled by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). The database contains information on the structure and working methods of 270 parliamentary chambers in all of the 193 countries where a national legislature exists.
The data has been compiled by the Inter-Parliamentary Union on the basis of information provided by National Parliaments by 1st November 2016. The percentages do not take into account the case of parliaments for which no data was available at that date.
Every IPU member parliament has a correspondent who is responsible for providing information on changes and updates to the IPU Secretariat. Additional information is gathered from other sources, including national electoral commissions and the media, and is regularly cross-checked with parliament.
